What is Marta?
Marta originally known as Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority as clear from its name is an transit system that takes care of public transport facilities like bus routes and railways in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area which covers mainly five counties under it that are DeKalb, Fulton, Clayton, Gwinnett and Cobb counties. It was created in the year 1971 as a bus system but with the passage of time spread its wings to other public transport services. The bus routes linked to a rapid transit system consists of 48 miles (77 km) of rail track that have 38 train stations on its route. The authority also operate a separate paratransit service for disabled persons with a fleet of 140 special lift-equipped vehicles to make it possible for disable persons to move freely. The authority is responsible for constructing new Railway lines and bus routes in the region. Its network consists of four railway lines, two bus rapid transits and holds a large fleet of buses that was 554 covering both Diesel and compressed natural gas buses as of March, 2010.
