The publicly owned company was set up in the year 1920. It was founded by a Japanese industrialist Jujiro Matsuda. In the initial years, it was named the Toyo Cork Kogyo Company Limited. In 1927, its name had been changed to Toyo Kogyo Company Limited. The launch of a Three wheeler truck Mazda Mazdago in 1931 resulted in shifting of the company's focus towards vehicle manufacturing from machine tools business.
The company joined hands with the automotive giant Ford Motor Company following the financial difficulties in 1960s. 1984 was the year when the company adopted the current name Mazda Motor Corporation. By the year 2011, the company emerged as one of the world's leading automaker as of total production. Mazda is sponsoring and has sponsored a number of sports teams and events including Hiroshima Toyo Carp, Nakhon Ratchasima, North Melbourne Football Club, Western New York Flash and Australian Rugby Championship. The corporate headquarter of the company is situated in Fuchu, Aki District.
