The history of J. Crew can be traced back to 1947, when two partners Mitchell Cinader and Saul Charles started a retail company given name Popular Merchandise, Inc. This merchandise store used to sell variety of women's clothes at reasonable price. Gradually, with the passage of time, Popular Merchandise Inc, got famous. In 1980, New York Times magazine given Popular Merchandise Inc place in most successful companies of that time. In 1989, the company got its present name J. Crews with first new store in Street Seaport. Later on, the company opened 45 more stores across the country. In 2011, the company entered into international market by opening first store outside the United States in the Yorkdale Shopping Center in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. J. Crew Group, Inc has been parted into division such as J. Crew Factory, Crewcuts, Madewell, The Liquor Store, The Ludlow Shop etc, and as per the report of 2014, it has strength of over 5,200 employees working at its various divisions. In January 2011, the company had 333 retail stores.
