Huntsville Utilities shortened as HU is a publicly owned corporation which is committed to provide Energy solutions to the people. Its main motto is to deliver consistent, reliable and cost effective electric, natural gas and water services. All the operations activities of the organization are provided under the Jurisdiction of Northern District of Alabama.
The Origin of the Huntsville Utilities can be dated back to 1805. In the year of 1823, Hunter Peel founded Alabama's premier public water system in the region, Huntsville Waterworks and later in 1887, Huntsville Electric utility was incorporated. In order to support natural gas services, it was integrated with Alabama-Tennessee National Gas Company in 1950. Currently, Huntsville Utilities covers nearly 1/4 million citizens of Madison and Marshall county with their water, gas and electricity plants.
The business functions of the Huntsville Utilities are conducted in Three units namely HU Gas system, HU Water system and HU Electric System, each of which is under the control of self dependent board, formulated by the city council. The source of electricity offered by the company is originated from Tennessee Valley Authority or simply the TVA. Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) together manages the safe & purified supply of water.
Approximately, 626 employees were hired by the company in its own 4 buildings and 32 field s across the region. It fills all the residential, commercial and industrial energy requirements. Huntsville Utilities has a total of 49,786 Gas, 174,959 Electric and 90,665 Water consumers respectively. The users can pay their bills using Bank draft, Western Union, Credit or Debit Card as well as at the customer service desk. One can also use e-billing service for bill payment.
Along with the American Public Gas Association Safety Award & American Public Gas Association Safety Management & Excellence Award, Huntsville Utilities is the recipient of many other honors like Standard & Poor’s Rating AA+, Moody’s Investors Service Aa1, Epa Safe Drinking Water Excellence Award,“Best Operated Surface Water Treatment Plant” Award etc.
