Dish Network is a Colorado, USA based direct broadcast satellite providing company. It offers various services such as pay television, pay per view, internet, video on demand etc. to residential and business customers. Dish Network is subscribed to over 14 million people throughout the country. Headquartered in Meridian, the company has the strength of over 34,000 employees. It is listed on Nasdaq as DISH.
Echostar began Dish Network in 1996 as one of its services which was set up in 1980 by Charlie Ergen to provide C band satellite television systems. It was allowed to provide direct broadcast satellite services in 1992 by Federal Communications Commission. In 1995, Echostar launched its maiden satellite Echostar I with the establishment of satellite connecting center in Wyoming. Since then, Echostar has launched over ten satellites to the space. After forming of Dish Network, it has crossed 100,000 customers by July 1996 while has been subscribed to over one million customers in the end of 1997. Dish was Pioneer to introduce a 500 channel satellite TV system, DISH 500 in 1999. Echostar launched Dish in Canada as Dish Network Canada through the joint venture with Bell Canada in the same year. Meanwhile the subscribers for Dish crossed two million marks. The company was the first to introduce HDTV tuner in 1999 while pioneer in offering channels in all states in 2004. In 2008, Dish Network has been split from EchoStar. Though it uses the satellite fleet owned by Echostar. After becoming a separate entity, the company started acquiring the bankrupt companies which was started from the buying of Blockbuster Inc. followed by DBSD and Terrestar. In 2012 the company rebranded itself as “Dish” after dropping the “Network” word and launched its new logo.
Coming to its services and products, the main services include channel packages, TV plans, on demand movie and content, Bolckbuster @Home etc. Dish Network sells various types of equipments for receiving the signals from satellite. These receivers have been manufactured at the facilities located in the USA and other nations like Mexico and India. It provides higher bandwitdh of HD signals through its higher capacity dishes. The company has produced a new kind of antenna, Dish 500 to receive signals from its all orbital locations. The broadcast technology of the company is in MPEG-2 and H.264 format.
It has launched Hopper DVR, known as Dish Hopper which are equipped with the pause, record, rewind, HD features. It comes with 3 tuners and 2 terabyte of space can store upto 500 hours of HD recording of TV content. Its advanced version is Hopper with Sling which was launched in 2013. Dish also provides access to streaming and DVR content by its app, Dish Anywhere. The another app is Dish Explorer which displays the content in thumbnails mode. The company also offers online streaming of TV content on Mobile phones and tablets which is available in several packages. It also offers TV packages in languages like Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, Brazil, French etc.
