In 1954, a new passenger terminal with an area of 70,000-square-foot was opened at the airport, following which its name was changed to the Douglas Municipal Airport. The new name was adopted to honor the mayor of Charlotte Ben Elbert Douglas, Sr. The airport has an aviation museum named Carolinas Aviation Museum which contains a collection of more than 50 aircraft and it was built in 1992.
