What is Calpers?
CalPERS is a shortened name of California Public Employees' Retirement System is a state-owned organization that is committed to provide pension, health, as well as after service advantages to over 1.6 million employees and their families. The organization offers a huge range of retirement and health benefit plans and services and manages other programs. Some service include administrative support services, real estate asset management, real estate acquisitions, external management services, corporate relations, and internal research services. CalPERS is known as leader in investment market and operates as an operation agency under the Government Operations Agency (CalGovOps).
Establishment and Name Changes
CalPERS came into existence as State Employees' Retirement System (SERS) in 1932. In 1953, SERS started invest in real estate, which was first only in bonds. The company started health insurance service for SERS members in 1962, and after five years in 1967 changed name into the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). There were some confusions with that name in other states, so the organization decided to change name in California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) in 1992. In 2007-08, 10.88 billion dollar was given in retirement advantages. Until March 2013, the organization has handled the biggest pension fund in the country, having 257.4 billion dollars of total property.
