U.S. Cellular was started as United States Cellular Corporation in 1983 as the subsidiary of the Telephone and Data Systems and went public in 1985. After purchased the major parts of cellular business from Bellsouth in 1997, United States Cellular rebranded as U.S. Cellular in 1999. It began its operations in the markets of Chicago in 2002 after purchasing some operating areas from PrimeCo Communications. It launched its wireless services in 2003 and launched its operations in Texas in 2004. It launched its Mobile Broadband services in 2008 and 3G Data Roaming coverage in 2010. It switched to CDMA technology from Digital AMPS and it was 2009 when company started delivering on EVDO network. In 2012, U.S. Cellular introduced its 4G services in some selected cities and regions in the U.S.A.

U.S. Cellular sells the handsets produced by Nokia, HTC, RIM, Huawei, Alcatel etc. While its tablet PCS range encompasses the models of Samsung, Motorola and Apple.

U.S. Cellular has brought the naming rights of many arenas and sporting events. It has purchased the naming rights of the U.S. Cellular Field, U.S. Cellular Coliseum, U.S. Cellular Arena while has been the sponsor of NASCAR Race, 80/35 MU.S.ic Festival etc.
