Saskatchewan Government Insurance shortened as SGI is a government owned corporation that operates Saskatchewan Auto Fund ; an insurance program and SGI Canada. Its headquarters is located in C.M. Fines Building Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. SGI was founded by the North America's government in 1945 to address the financial needs of the residents of Saskatchewan. The company delivered its first policy on May 1, 1945. A few days later, Oscar Saw, a resident of Maple Creek was chosen as the company's insurance agent. Towards the end of 1945, SGI had employed about 60 people and extended its services to several insurance agents situated throughout the regions of Saskatchewan.
The Saskatchewan Auto Fund is termed as a mandatory public automobile insurance program that deals in the registration of vehicles such as Cars, jeeps, tractors etc and issuing of driver licenses,
whereas SGI CANADA is an operating unit of the Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) that provides coverages on houses, business organizations etc. The unit trades in different names across counties of Canada like SGI CANADA Insurance Services Ltd in Alberta province of Canada. All these services are offered to individuals, farmers and businessmen etc and both the SGI CANADA and Saskatchewan Auto Fund are formed under the The Automobile Accident Insurance Act and The Saskatchewan Government Insurance Act, 1980 respectively.
Currently, the SGI is an association comprising of 2000 working staff, about 300 insurance agents etc. The company's operational network spans to the communities located across Saskatchewan in the form of 5 salvage and 21 claim centers. On October 2008, SGI featured in the Canada's Top 100 Employers list presented by the Mediacorp Canada Inc.
