Rooms To Go was started in 1991 in Orlando, Florida. Its Roots can be traced back to 1930's when Julius Seaman started the furniture retailing business under the name, Seaman's Furniture. After the death of Julius Seaman, his business was carried forward by his son Morton Seaman. To expand the Seaman's Furniture business, Morton Seaman started giving advertisement and opened more stores. Seaman's Furniture was purchased by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts and Co. in 1988. Meanwhile Morton Seaman was joined by his son, Jeffrey Seaman. In 1990, Seamans left the company after Matthew D. Serra was appointed as the new president of Seaman's Furniture.
Jeffery Seaman decided to run new furniture retailing company and opened Rooms To Go's first store in Florida in 1990. After observing the space and designs of many departmental stores and clothing stores, he chosen “Gappish'--uniform, colorful, interesting and open" layout for its furniture stores.
