National Grid was originated through the privatization of the operations of Central Electricity Generating Board. The company was granted the transmission business of the Board. It went public in 1995 and later carried several acquisitions. It took over New England Electric System and EUA (Eastern Utilities Associates) in 2000 while owned Niagara Mohawk Holdings, Inc, a US based power utility in 2001. It became National Grid Transco plc after being merged with Lattice Group in 2000. It was the owner of the fifty percent of distribution network of the UK. In 2005, National Grid Transco was rebranded as National Grid plc, which later on renamed as National Grid Electricity Transmission plc.
National Grid acquired Keyspan Corporation, a gas and electricity utility company based in the USA along with the New England Gas Company located in Rhode Island. These acquisitions helped National Grid to be one of the largest utility companies in the USA with the base of over eight million customers. In 2009, National Grid entered into partnership with TenneT to transmits its lines.
