In April 2011, Mlgw received the national award for quality electric operation maintenance. The history of the utility company started in 1902, when the city bought a private water system and established Memphis Artesian Water Department. The Memphis Light, Gas and Water was born in 1939 as a result of acquisition of Memphis Power and Light Company's regional electrical operations. The largest three-service municipal utility system is MLGW in the nation.
