The Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation was founded in 1946 as a division of the State Medical Society. WPS became the member of the Medicare program in 1966 and in the same year Medicare was established as a Part B administrator for Wisconsin State. WPS continued in this role and purchased additional contracts from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This contract provides Part B administration in Illinois, Michigan, and Minnesota.
In 1975, a legislation was passed by the Wisconsin legislature. Because of this legislation service insurance corporations is legally separated from the parent professional society. To Act in accordance with a wish or command of this new regulation, gives birth to Wisconsin Physicians Service Insurance Corporation on 27th April 1977.
