Sky is the satellite television and radio service brand of the British Sky Broadcasting Group plc or BskyB and covers throughout the UK. It is broadcast through Astra satellites and Eutelsat 28 A. It is counted among one of the leading satellite TV service providers in the UK. It is the erstwhile Sky Digital and run various marketing campaigns under the slogans like, "What do you want to watch?", "Entertainment your way", "Believe in Better" etc. Its listing of channels include Sky series of channels and others like RTE One, 3e, Syfy, TLC, Mtv, BBC, pick, Sony etc. It gives the services of TV watching, packages and other products online through its official . Sky Tv has launched smartphone application to provide video and TV content on Mobile phone or other devices. The app provides the access to over 60 channels and can be subscribed upto 2 devices.
Sky was launched in October 1998 as Sky Digital, which provided improvement in sound and picture quality. Gradually, new channels were added to the packages. It started selling its receiver, Digibox after some months of its launching. Sky Digital changed its orbital position from 19.2°E to 28.5°E to shifting to digital technology. Its digital service was subscribed more customers than its analogue services, which went defunct in 2001. In the same year, Sky Digital was rebranded as Sky. On May, 2006, Sky begun to offer its HD services under Sky+ HD. As per the company claims, forty thousand people subscribed for its HD service, when it was about to launch. As of 2013, it had the customers base of over 4,786,000 people.
Sky provides the navigation into the listing of channels, program schedules and other related updates by using EPG or Electronic Program Guide. All channels are listed into the category according to their related genre.
Sky uses MPEG-2 format in the transmission of its channels in SDTV with the options of Dolby digital soundtracks. It is relied on MPEG-4 technology in the transmission of its HD services by using DVB S2.
