Limerick Prison is located at Mulgrave Street, Limerick in Ireland. The prison is said to have built in between 1815 and 1821. Irish Prison Service looks after prison service in Ireland and it comes under the jurisdiction of the Minister for Justice and Equality. Limerick Prison had undergone massive renovations and expansions. The prison has a capacity of 290 males and 20 female beds. The Prison was reported overcrowded by the Inspector of Prisons in 2012. A new unit of the women’s prison has been opened up and when the prison is overcrowded a few male inmates will be shifted to the unoccupied beds of the female prison in the old unit.
