Our Parish Priest, Fr. Arthur Opiniano, plans to completely demolish our Church, the St. Paul the Apostle Parish located at three Scout Santiago St. Cor. Mother Ignacia Ave. In Bgy. Laging Handa, QC against the wishes of many Parishioners and without any evidence of structural defects to merit such demolition. Our Church has withstood strong earthquakes and super typhoons. It only needs retrofitting and repair of leaking roof. The priest wants to instead build a costly PhP 245million 6-level structure to create more income-genereting spaces making worship seemingly secondary (3-level underground basement parking, columbarium and additional function rooms). We the Parishioners cannot not afford such a big amount. It will require us to draw out loans and years of extensive fund raising for something which could otherwise be spent to support the following:
- Retrofitting and repair of the Church’s leaking roof — this is more appropriate and modest;
- Regular Church maintenance and upkeep — right now the Parish Priest does not provide enough funds to maintain our Church so we Parishioners constantly have to volunteer and spend for its cleaning; and
- Re-opening the Church Clinic which has served countless Parishioners and disadvantaged families. The Parish Priest ordered the closure of this Clinic run by volunteer Parishioners and private medical professionals. We call on the media to denounce this practice of Bishops destroying existing churches to have more income-generating spaces. THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT POPE FRANCIS IS FIGHTING AGAINST -- BISHOPS and PRIESTS TRANSFORMING CHURCHES INTO BUSINESS ESTB. Many churches have been are are being destroyed in the process, including an ancient church in Batangas; San Rafael Church in Tondo, Fatima Parish in QC, the church in Filinvest, etc. We hope you will give this urgent request your prompt consideration, Should you need further clarifications, please contact any of the undersigned. Hindi po namin malaman ang dahilan at kung ano ang nangyayari dahil mula po ng macomatose ang aking biyenan ay sunod sunod na pong nangamatay ang pamilya ng aking asawa. Mula po noong January hanggang ngayon na may kasalukuyang nakaburol ay pito na po ang namamatay. Bago po nacoma ang biyenan ko ay may nauna ng tatlong namatay.
