Hertz was formed in 1918 by Walter L. Jacobs as the car rental company with fleet of Model T Ford cars. Later on Jacobs sold his business to John D Hertz, who named it as "Hertz Drive-Ur-Self System" and made it the division of his Yellow Truck and Coach Manufacturing Company. In 1925, General Motors purchased the operations from Mr Hertz. After selling his business to the GM, Hertz set up The Omnibus Corporation, through which he succeed to get his car rental business back from General Motors in 1953. The Ominibus Corporation was rebranded as “The Hertz Corporation” and started trading on NYSE. Hertz Corporation acquired the truck rental company, Metropolitan Distributors in 1954. In 1959, Hertz launched its marketing campaign under the slogan of “Let Hertz put you in the driver’s seat”.
From 1960's to 2000s, the company's ownership was passed to different companies such as RCA, Park Ridge Corporation, Ford Motor Company, Volvo followed by the private investors.
In 2010, Hertz owned the second hand car dealer, British Car Auctions followed by the setting up of kiosks throughout the USA in 2011.
