What is Gujarat College Ahmedabad?
Located at Ellisbridge, Ahmedabad, Gujarat Arts and Commerce College is amongst the oldest educational institution in the country. It is managed by the Education Department of the state government and is known for its affordable fee structure. It primarily had two faculties which being Arts and Science, and later due to the increasing demand Commerce branch was introduced. The institute was established in the year 1860. It has an expansive campus and Victorian architectural buildings. To begin with the college was affiliated to Bombay University in 1879 and later in the year 1938 Gujarat University gave affiliation to it. It is recognised by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi and is funded by the same. It remained an important centre stage during freedom movements with national leaders guiding the student movement within the college campus. Veer Vinod Kinariwala was the first student martyr of the country during “Quit India Movement” and the college has a memorial in his memory. In 1970 the department of dramatics was established and thereafter in 2009 Department of Computer Science. The college campus includes an arts building, science and physics buildings, library, halls, botanical garden, tutorial building and playground. The college has a strong focus on overall development of the students by means of various activities like academic counselling, educational guidance, job placements, diverse co-curricular activities apart from the routine classroom teaching.
