What is Fort Scratchley?
Fort Scratchley is a past shoreline defense set up and currently is a museum. The Fort is situated in Newcastle East of Nsw in Australia. The fort was developed in 1882 to protect the city from a possible Russian assault. Even so, its weapons were not fired in anger till June 1942, at the time of the putting of Newcastle. The Australian Military eventually left the location in 1972. Scratchley is located on top of Flagstaff Hill, looking over the Tasman Sea and the Hunter River, less than 0.6 miles from the Newcastle Central Business District. It is reached from Nobbys Road and is straight between Newcastle and Nobbys beaches. Initially developed as a Seaside Defense Fort, the fort is situated in a ordering location.
