FAO Schwarz is an America based privately held company that specializes in toys for children of all ages. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Toys "R" Us, Inc. Fao Schwarz offers a diverse range of clothing and other related accessories for children. The company's product line includes bikes and scooters, baby boutique, books, music and DVDs, games and puzzles, building sets and blocks, kids' clothes, toddler and kids' rooms, vehicles and remote control, video games etc. FAO Schwarz sells products under various brands including Corolle, Lionel, Gund, Chicco, Carrera, Calico Critters, LeapFrog, Middleton Doll, Mega Bloks, Madame Alexander, Playmobil, LEGO, Kettler and many more. It started business operations in the year 1862. The company was established in Baltimore and initially, it was engaged in manufacturing dolls and its name was Toy Bazaar. In the year 1974, the F.A. Weber International bought the assets of the company. In 1870, FAO Schwarz made its presence in New York under the name Schwarz Toy Bazaar and later shifted its operations to Broadway in the city. After that, it emerged and named as the city's largest toy dealer by the New York Times. In the year 1985, the company's operations were acquired by California based Christiana Companies which retained ownership only for one year. The company in 1889 started advertising its products through newspapers and other communication mediums and later, it changed its name to F.A.O. Schwarz. By 2000s, FAO Schwarz opened its stores at 39 locations across the United States. In 2004, the Las Vegas and New York locations and e-commerce business of the company were sold to D. E. Shaw and Company. In 2009, the company expanded its business operations after acquiring Best and Company. FAO Schwarz has also been featured in various movies including Big, Mighty Aphrodite and The Smurfs. The corporate headquarter of the company is situated in New York.
