Carfax is a web-based service in which history related to a particular vehicle like used cars and light trucks is provided to an individual and businesses. The service is provided by an American company named 'R.L. Polk & Company'. The service was created by two Men named Ewin Barnett III who was a computer professional and Robert Daniel Clark, an accountant in Columbia, Missouri in the year 1984. Initially they collected information from Missouri Automobile Dealers Association and released its first directory of vehicle history in the year 1986 and contained just 10,000 records which were distributed VIA fax machine. The company offers free vehicle research services in four categories which are Lemon Check, Record Check, Recall Check and Problem Car. Now the company database is having millions of records from the United States and Canadian automobile market. People can have an option of taking vehicle history report in both digital and printed form. The company works close to several car safety and reliability rating companies and organizations like the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, J.D. Power and Associates, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, IntelliChoice and others.
