History

Bally Total Fitness was started by 'Bally Manufacturing' a gym equipment manufacturing company in the year 1983. In the year 1987 it became world's largest owner and operator of fitness centers. The company expanded its business when it bought two other businesses named as 'American Fitness Centers' and 'Nautilus Fitness Centers'. The company separated from its parent company in the year 1996 and in the year 2007 filed for bankruptcy. It sold out its 170 gyms in different states of the country the year 2011. As of September, 2014 the company had 60 gyms of their own in the country. Before filing for bankruptcy the chain had 440 gyms in the chain in different parts of the world including Mexico, Canada, South Korea, China, and the Caribbean Islands, most of which it sold to other companies as the chain was running out of money from the year 2007.
