Akai's official name is Akai Sales Pte Limited. Its principal range of products include washing machines, microwave ovens, Air conditioners, air coolers, heaters, refrigerators, vacuum cleaners, color televisions, home theater systems and speakers, amplifiers, micro music players, reel-to-reel audiotape recorders, audio cassette decks, CD and DVD players, music systems, AV receivers etc. Akai sells its products across Asia, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and North and South America.
The company is headquartered in Singapore and its additional offices are located all over the world. The company was started by the joint efforts of Masukichi Akai and his son, Saburo Akai on July 15th 1929. The former name of Akai was Akai Electric Company Limited. During 1984, Akai formed a new division, Akai Professional to make and sell a wide range of Electronic instruments and similar products. The first product of Akai Professional was the MG1212, a 12 channel, 12 track recorder. Many principal of Akai brand were distributed by many other brands like Roberts in the United States, A&D in Japan, Tensai and Transonic Strato in Western Europe. The Tensai International worked as an exclusive dealer for Akai in European markets till the year 1988. As of 1990s, the company had annual sales of HK$40 billion (US$5.2 billion).
In 1999, Akai Professional became a separate company. In the same year, the Akai Singapore also established a flagship company as Akai India Limited for Indian electronics industry. The Akai India was established by the joint venture between Akai Electric Co Limited and Videocon Limited. The company planned to make and sell approximately 3.5 lakh color televisions in first year and in 2001, the company set its aim to make 5 Lakh sets. In 2003, Akai expanded its business with household products.
