I had a disturbing experience at your Ferry Building location yesterday, September 4th. I rarely shop the Ferry building, so I was unaware of the correct procedure for shopping. There was a good sized open space to the right of the counter with just the bread I needed on shelves. I picked up a loaf, and put it into a bag I saw just there and was getting in line to pay when a fellow came to me and said in an accusing tone, "Did you pick that bread up yourself?" I responded that I had. The shook his head sadly and said, "Please do not do that. "I apologized and said I was not aware of correct procedure. He did not accept my apology, only shook his head again and said "Please, do not do that. " At this point I became angry. I felt that I was being treated like a naughty child. I took the bread out of the bag, put the bag down and dropped the bread on top of it. I looked him in the eye and said, "You just lost a sale. " He said, "That's fine. "
I work in retail too and deal occasionally with customers who need to be made aware of mistakes they have made regarding store policy they might be unaware of. I never use it as an opportunity to demean a customer. I was made needlessly angry when this situation need never have occurred, and ACME lost a sale as well. I suppose what angered me most was this fellows complete lack of desire to resolve this in any positive way. You have not lost a customer for good, but I am not happy. Paul Ellis .
