What is Avis?

Avis originally 'Avis Rent a Car System, LLC' is an American car rental company having its offices and other locations throughout the world. The company was started with just a fleet of Three cars in the year 1946 with the hard works of Warren Avis after whom the business was named. Its first location was opened at Willow Run Airport, Ypsilanti in Michigan. The company became the second largest car rental company in the United States by the year 1953. After working for several years in the United States, the company opened its offices in some international locations in Europe, Canada and Mexico. Since its beginning the company is owned by number of companies and groups and from the year 2006 it is owned and operated by 'Avis Budget Group'. The company acquired number of small travel and car rental companies in order to expand its own business. The company owns a large fleet of vehicles that are used in providing car rental services that include many luxury brand names like General Motors, Chevrolet, Cadillac and non luxury vehicles from Ford and Toyota. The company has about 4900 locations throughout the world as of March, 2007. Its parent company also own other vehicle rental companies like 'Budget Rent a Car' and 'Budget Truck Rental'.
